Acupuncture in the Treatment of Neurological Problems and Pain

Neurological problems include: peripheral neuropathy, weakness, numbness and pain which usually occurs in the hands and feet. Peripheral neuropathy results from damage to the peripheral nerves of the brain and spinal cord. Peripheral neuropathy can also affect the motor nerves, sensory nerves and autonomic nerves.  A common cause of peripheral neuropathy is diabetes, but it can also result from injuries, low energy and poor circulation. Symptoms of peripheral neuropathy generally include: pain, a sensation of pins and needles, numbness and weakness. Peripheral neuropathy can also be asymptomatic, but most patients experience pain in common areas such as the back, feet, hands and legs. The pain commonly occurs at night and is often described as a burning and tingling sensation or a sharp pain. People living with peripheral neuropathy may also experience muscular cramping, difficulty walking and problems with coordination.

Acupuncture can be used to successfully treat peripheral neuropathy by stimulating the damaged nerves. This will prevent the nerves from dying off and relieve the symptoms associated with peripheral neuropathy. Acupuncture also has far fewer side effects than medications when used in the treatment of nerve regeneration and preservation. It also stimulates blood flow which makes the nerves function properly. The goal is to restore blood and qi to the damaged area, stopping the symptoms associated with neuropathy. With a series of treatments, acupuncture can effectively reduce or eliminate neuropathy pain. A meta-analysis of current studies has shown that acupuncture is effective in treating diabetic neuropathy, Bell’s palsy, carpal tunnel syndrome and chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy.
